A ‘Christmas Catch-up’ Message from the Headteacher

Well, this term feels like it has flown by. Following the many events, activities and trips during Term One, Term Two has been about stability and consistency.

The school has settled into a positive, academic, working environment for three days of the week, with a wide variety of exciting work placements for the vast majority on one day; finishing the week with the vocational subjects.  Finally, our vocational morning is followed by the bustle and business of the Friday afternoon Enrichment programme.

We have now entered the first phase of examination preparation with a week of Trial exams for our Year 11s. I must say that students have been extremely focused during a busy Monday with no less than three exams in English, mathematics and science.

The Year 10s have certainly settled into their new school. I have particularly enjoyed listening to many of the stories about their first days at work and the adventures that many of the students are enjoying.

The Year 12s have begun to settle into a routine of intense academic study combined with work placements and independent study time. Like in many 6th Forms, some find the change to greater independence much easier than others. The Engineering course arranged in partnership with the IOW College and the A Levels in psychology and physics have been well received, though students have commented on the marked difference in standards to achieve top grades. A host of applications have now been received for Head Boy and Head Girl from 6th Formers. The interview stage will follow before the announcement of the successful candidate in the New Year.

For all Year groups, progress data will be shared with students and sent home immediately after we return in January.

So, to events – What a busy time we have! Here is the list of events in the run-up to Christmas:

Wednesday 7th December – 6th Form Christmas meal at the Lifeboat Inn

Monday 12th December – Christmas Jumper Day and the Great Christmas Studio Bake-Off

Tuesday 13th December – the IOW Studio School Annual Awards Ceremony (invites only)

Wednesday 14th December – Christmas Community Coffee Morning & Craft Fair (11 – 1pm)

Thursday 15th December – the Yule Ball at Northwood House (7 -10.30pm)

Friday 16th December – Studio School Christmas Olympics (1pm – 3pm)

School closes 3pm and re-opens Monday 3rd January 2017

On behalf of all the staff at the Isle of Wight Studio School, here’s wishing all our students and their families a very “Merry Christmas”.
